Arati Devasher paints and dyes silk by hand, creating luxurious scarves, ties and necklaces. Vibrant colour is key to her work, a legacy of her Indian heritage and upbringing. Intricate florals and sharp geometric motifs are the main focus of her designs. Fish and birds make occasional appearances, always in repetition, thereby creating their own patterns.
Each piece is individually designed and begins its life as pure white china silk. Arati brushes on eco-friendly hot soy wax and dyes in multiple layers on painted silk pieces. Her hand-dyed collections are made by brushing dye on to the precisely folded and clamped pieces of silk that create the geometric patterns of traditional Japanese shibori. Living and working in London, she shows her work at UK craft and trade shows.
